============= START TRANSMISSION ============= Starfleet Datalink Upload Stardate: 2019.06.27 Time: 014:25:00 ============ START TEXT MESSAGE ============= R. A. E. Smythe Date: 2019.06.27 Starfleet Command Developer's Log #45 Major Update.. Well, it's Good and Bad News... The Bad News... The 20 acres in Tehatchapi was a bust, the weather was absolute horrible. It was f'ing Cold 9 months out of the Year, and there was a continous 30 mph Wind to contend with so I gave the Property back to the owner. Even though it had a few issues I felt like I could have over come, it was just too Cold and Wind all the Time. So I set my sights back on the Desert. The Good News is.... I found the new spot, and already have been working it for the last 5 years as a Film and Music Video Ranch, and a Festival Site. The new Property is 2 1/2 acres, and has direct access to Munsey Road from down below, back with accessible Mountains, and closed off as a Federal DesertTortoise Reserve. We currently have already established ourselves as a Rental Event Space, with either Music Festivals or Film and Music Video Shoots almost every month. We are currently shut down because of the complete renovation and overhaul of the site and new Builds for the new direction I am taking. I am for the Starfleet Command - Mojave site to become a weekend destination, open year round. I loved the other 40 Property, not only because of all the space, but because it was on a well maintained, blacktop Road (that at first, seem really really remote... it was not), and I completely loved the access to the Dry Lakebed, the Mountains located directly behind the Property, which would have easily lent itself, as an alternative to an Alien Planet Surface, which is one reason I was kinda brought back to the same area. But.. the this time, on the more secluded side of the Dry Lake, on a desolate 15 mile long, Dead End Road (I am only 7 miles down that road). My neighbor, further down the stretch of desolate Road, is the static "Rocket Test Site" Guys (they just tested NASA's new Rocket last Week)... awesome neighbors BTW... Our first remodel for Phase 1 is the Coffee Shop and the Parking Lot Stage Area, it has been rebranded as the "602 Lounge" and will now include some new stuff. The Office Trailer and the Party Lounge has been moved out of the middle of the Event Space and Parking lot, to a far corner, out of the way. This opens up the Parking lot to a more cohesively connected Event. Plus, now my own personal space and Workshop are seperated from the Frey, and open access. There will be a VIP Camp Area with a fenced in Private area, pre-setup Tents, and Private Bathrooms, and Showers. Not available to the Public. Then for the end of Phase 1 we move down and finish the 10 Forward Lounge, then the Commissary and Quark's Tavern, and finish up with the Stage for the Pyramid. On the Starbase LARP side... Work on the "New Players Guide" initial version is up, but I have already updated it 3 times since then. The Marshal's Guide just got a huge update, which includes the new Uniform Guidelines. The Employee Handbook is looking good and almost ready to post. The Gameplay and Rule Book is coming along amazingly. Pretty much got the Mission Layout Structure laid out, now just need to fill in each the individual Missions, and their Levels. Working on the Point System. Now we are beginning to look at the Hardware and Software choices that have to be made, now that we are further along. We have dumped the VR and AR Headset idea as they are far to impractical for use in this case, and went with the Tricorder instead. It will be loaded with a Mission App, and little else. The Mission App is well under way and the basic outline of the whole APP has been created using HTML, and just needs to be Coded into APP and AR Software. I am excited to be looking at the Plans for Phase 2. We are adding a Shushi Bar, a Pho Noodle Shop, a VR Arcade, the Starfleet Command - Mojave HQ (with a Mission Training Training Area), the Laser Tag Arena The 602 Lounge will have the Atomic Cafe Coffee Shop, the Starcade Arcade, Rick's Americana Taco Stand, the 602 Bar, and the 602 Stage. If things work out, I should be finished with the entire Project, including the Starbase 1 LARP, just in time for the Away Mission - 001 "Open House" in Aug... Phase 3, which will include the Mission: Charlie Project, the final Starbase 1 Mission Simulation. A full-size Starship Bridge, and a Main Engineering Room, connected by a Starbase 1 Hub, are the main focus of the new Mission Simulation. So that's the Plan... So far so Good... ============= START TRANSMISSION ============= Starfleet Datalink Upload Stardate: 2019.07.08 Time: 013:45:00 ============ START TEXT MESSAGE ============= R. A. E. Smythe Date: 2019.07.08 Starfleet Command Personal Log #14401 It's probably just me, but after years of studying this Events and Festival thing, I have come to understand, a little about navigating a Business or Event through this current fractured social environment... It has exposed itself in every fashion from a Black Ariel to Tom Cruise playing a Samurai. Nobleman... Besides the fact that most are Social Misfits, and require hand holding through every aspect of Social Life, or you engineer the Group using Science...LoL Everyone else is looking for bigger and bigger... i'm focusing on smaller and smaller. After 5 years of watching and studying, I have found when you have an Event that is more like a House Party, and less like a Music Festival, people are more respectful, because they are not lost in the Crowd, and everyone pretty much knows each other, and it was a "private invitation" vs blanket Adverts... When there is little to no degree of separation between people, or anonymity (everyone mostly knows everyone, or is known by someone or a group) People tend to act better, cause someone there knows them, and will hold them responsible for their actions, even after the Event. Another thing I notice with the larger Events, they tend to attract "opportunist" and thoughtless Vandalism... They either walk around the Event, trying to isolate People who have had to much "Party Material" and will take advantage or or in some cases, Rob them. They will sell Fake/Lethal Drugs, , or throw the Bar Chairs into the Bonfire (notice, in the Remodel we have all built in benches, and Standing Bars), take the Spikes for the Horseshoe Game, and often cut or put out cigarettes in carpet, furniture, or Bar Tops, I have even seen people take a Dump on "top" of the Toilet Seat, even though the Porto was almost empty, or throw cans, bottles, and yes, even garbage Bags in the Portos, you can't even imagine how many times this has happened (or maybe you can). These types of things happen when you can do any ol' stupid Sh*t, cause no one at the Event knows your or anything about you, it tends to bring out the Dark side in People "in General"... Sooo... the only other thing left to throw in this Gumbo is, Haters... Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, Haters gonna Hate. That being said... Wow, those guys can hold on to an old Bone can't they?... In the Fandom World especially, right... They are brutally insane about their Franchises, and how they think everything about them should Go... and they become absolutely obsessive about whatever "Outrage of the Day" they are angry about. Which actually ended up being a good thing for me, because shortly after that, they laid out strict Rules on all Fan-based Projects, and actually led us to creating Original Content for all aspects of our Environment and our LARP Missions, and is only loosely based in the Sci-fi World. We only use things that were borrowed from the real World (you know, like the Orville, LoL...).. Live Long and Prosper... in service, Smitty ============ END TEXT MESSAGE ============= Commander R. Smythe Date: 2019.07.10 Starfleet Command Personal Log #14344 Wow... sorry about the long pause between updates, but I have been swamped with the work and organization of the Project. The Project's Manuals have felt like Quicksand when it comes to forward momentum. Not that work has not been done it's just that there are so many of them. There are four Manuals associated with this Project (so far) (can be Viewed here - starfleetmngmt.proboards.com/board/54/starbase-1-larp-documents ) 1. The Rules and Gameplay Manual, 140 pages (and counting), which is the main doc that encompasses the whole project, and explains everything in Detail. 2. The New Users Manual, 30 pages, gives a Brief Overview of Gameplay and Rules. 3. The Employee Manual, 29 pages which outlines all the Employee Requirement, Jobsite Rules and Regulations. 4. The Marshall's Handbook, 25 pages, and gives brief Overview of Gameplay and Rules, from the Marshall's perspective, and outlines all the Marshall's Requirement and Gameplay Rules and Regulations. Then we have the Gameplay App, which is basically a Tricorder style piece of equipment that will be taking advantage of the AR capabilities in the Unity Software. The main outline of the APP has already been Prototyped in HTML, and now we are discussing whether we even need to go to the next step, and use the Unity Software package to make it a Standalone App. Phase 1 of the 602 Lounge is coming along. The 602 Bar is starting to take shape, Rick's Americano's Taco Stand's Floor is installed, and the Counter is about to be cut and sealed with Polyurethane, then installed. Next the side walls and the Sink. The Starcade Arcade has gotten a lot preliminary Work done on it. The Entrance Sinage, is done and in... Smythe Date: 2019.09.22 Starfleet Command Dev Log #144 Still working on the Starfleet LARP Manual, just slogging through the first rough Draft, if you can believe that. It's already at 350 Pages, and that's mostly just getting the Book Format arranged. Maybe once I'm finished, will post the 2nd Draft, as most of the content will be in, replacing all the current "place holding" content. One of the things I'm grappling with is not just the Combat Rules and Outlines, but the MP and XP Point Systems... Will there be Hand to Hand Combat? Between Players and NPCs? Can Players Die? So many questions, which all have to be answered. Since Points are accrued through the APP, no cards or Dice or any of that stuff is needed (thank god always hated that about LARPS). Have not done any Physical Work to the outpost in the last few weeks, the Heat was just debilitating, but did manage to get a lot of Web work, and Manual Updating done... I have also picked up a lot of Materials, required for the Remodel Job, like fresh Pipe Cement, hardware Parts, and Paints and Stains. Most in anticipation of coming work. Still stuck up top working on the 602 Lounge and Bar... Now that we are finally getting decent weather, maybe I'll start back up outside. Next is to figure out what's next, 10 Forward, the VIP Camp Section, or Quark's Tavern... the VIP Camp is the only one I don't have materials for yet, but will probably be the most useful, coming up... it will provide Tents, private Portopotties, and Showers, unavailable to the General Public, and will be fenced in with a Concierge style Gatekeeper... in service, Smitty ============ END TEXT MESSAGE ============= Commander R. Smythe Date: 2019.11.15 Starfleet Command Developer's Log #49 Gratuitous Update.. Wow... will try to keep you up dated more often... The 602 Bar is almost a wrap, the Atomic Cafe Coffee Shop, get's it's new built in counter finally, got the wood just needs to be cut and fitted. It will be a one piece wrap around counder I'm making custom... Counters are Polyurathane coated and ready to screw into place. Got the Peice of Plexi to install as the Counter Window, did my first "cuttint" test to see if it would splinter all over the place... it did not. it was still a little rough, but it doesn't matter because it's on the bottom behind 1/2" molding... Got the Pieces for the Starlight Arcade, the 8' x 12' x 1' Sign board, the 4 pieces of Plexi for the window, but forgot the corregated aluminum sheet for the front bottom. Oh well no biggy, luckily they have them at the local Ace up the street, and won't have to trek all the way back to the Home Depot in Ridgecrest.... Picked up all the Wood for the upper deck on Quark's Tavern. Got all the seating and support framing 2 x 4s, next drag the "Pond Liner" down to lay down the Vapor barrier, over the Deck, before the Carpet goes down. If i didn't lay down the barrier, any liquid spilled would leak right down on the Workers below... and it is a Bar, and Accidents do hapen, a lot... Almost ready to release a 1st Rough Draft of the Manual (currently stands at 473 pages, still it's just the Outline Boilerplate. Each of the Missions now have to be described individually, and in depth, which is fine, because I have a fill in the Blanks type format set up that should make it as close to copy/drop/modify situation as I can make it hopefully with-in the next week... Did I say that once already?... I hope not, that would mean the days are starting to blurr together... LoL. The Weather is absolutely amazing, perfect. Not to Hot, not to Cold (except at night). Getting ready to go Paint Wall panels for Quark's and then go get the rest of the Copper colored insert panels, so I can do the Gear motif on them. It will really tie it all together.. You can see the copper insert panels in the last Pic, the 2 white chairs are sitting in front of it. Those will get the Gear Motif, as well as the 2 matching insert panels on the opposite back wall... Phone still out of commission, so no Camera, which means no new Pics... Smythe Date: 2020.1.10 Starfleet Command Developer's Log #52 Required Update.. Woo Hoo... Phone is Fixed, which means I can take pictures again. I was holding off, hoping not to have to waste money on a stand alone camera, I would have much more rather picked up the 10" Android Padds, so it could also be used to test the Mission App, which will also all be run on "in-house" Android-based Tricorder Units. So the iPhone got a New Screen, New Battery, and the iPad is slated to be next. It will be crucial, since I also use it as my Digital Camera Slate during Production, for my up coming Shoots. Work wise, the Starbase 1 LARP Manual is going awesome, and the Site remodeling just started back up, after the Holiday Break... thanks in part to the warmer weather. I am grateful for the Break, it was some much needed R&R time off. The weather has started it's march towards summer, and now it's perfect outside during the day. Trying to get the 602 Lounge, and the Arcade finished by next week. Cross you fingers... Finalizing the Tent selection for the VIP Tents, have a firm idea of the enclosure design... The end of this month I will do a 3 Tent Set-up, Started in on my Hybrid Solar Setup (finally), got most of the Parts, picked up a new, top of the Line "Deep Cycle" Battery from Autozone, with the extended 3 year Warranty, and thinking I will probably pick up at least one more once I get things started. After years of dealing with all types of Solar builds, it is my opinion the weakest point is the Batteries. All of the up and down cycling takes it's toll quickly on the Battery Stack. Just like I discovered the beauty of buying a "New" 1,000 Watt Generator from Harbor Freight, that I could return for a new one no questions asked, indefinitely, especially considering that from experience, they normally had between a 6 and 12 month Lifespan, so, combined with their lenient Return Policy, in the last 15 years, I never had much down time, that later, a quick run to the local HF and swap out in Minutes... Short Lifespans on most equipment I found out, was notorious here in the desert. The Modular Solar Panel Hub, and the Digital Controller from Harbor Freight work flawlessly. The System will mostly just run all the interior 12 volt lights in the Office and the Crew Quarters... but it's main function is to run the Satellite Modem, for the Internet which needs 110 AC, not even a 1/4 amp so, no really big system really needed... But, my "inside" 800 watt Inverter needs to be changed out, seems to have stopped working... <Rant> I wanted to Schedule a small Viewing Party for either the new Season of Discovery, or Picard but unfortunately they both air on Thursdays, which puts it logistically out of "Time/Distance" Range, at least for an Event by us, or for an overnight Viewing Party here, espically one starting on a Thursday Night. It's just not feasible, with many having to still go to work the next day (Friday), that means a drive 200+ miles round Trip, to view a 1 hour TV Show, and the have to quickly leave to get back home for the next day's Workday. And, movin the Veiwing Party to Friday makes the whole event ho humm... it's hard to get excited about watching something that's already almost 2 days old. This seems like a flaw in their Marketing Strategy, because they are no longer vying for time on a Network, it' a Streamed Show. It certainly would be a far more enjoyable viewing Group Viewing experiene if they Aired their Shows on Friday nights instead. It would surely add greater depth association, and a more satisfying bonding experience with the it's various Brands, not just Star Trek... </Rant> For those keeping Track... the "Mission Gameplay and Rulebook" is up to 538 pages, and climbing... ============= START TRANSMISSION ============= Starfleet Datalink Upload Stardate: 2020.1.13 Time: 009:25:00 ============ START TEXT MESSAGE ============= R. A. E. Smythe Date: 2020.1.13 Starfleet Command Developer's Log #54 Required Update.. For those keeping Track... the "Mission Gameplay and Rulebook" is coming along nicely... sorry, it's taking so long... LoL... did not realize pretty much building a LARP from Scratch, within an already defined Genre would be as daunting as it has been, let me tell you. I mean, don't get me wrong, i'm in Nerd Heaven right now... Updating and redefining a age old Genre? I'm in... Using the existing known Frame work of LARPs, I brought in the exciting Gameplay of Tabletop, Computer RPGs, combined with Brain Teasers, Dexterity and Cipher Puzzles, and Team-based Work Assignment related Tasks... 546 pages, and still going... I am glad, now that I have progressed wa-a-a-a-a-ayyyy further into it's completion, looking back, I'm so friggin glad I didn't release the first Draft earlier, before I was ready. I would have giving a shockingly incoherent picture of what I was building. Even though the "First Rough Draft" is literally an Outline of the major Game Components, a Glimpse into the inner workings of Gameplay, such as the Leaderboard concept, the Combat Rules, General Mission and Gameplay parameters. The Missions and Levels are outlined, and the Gameplay difference between the 3 different Mission's Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. The first version (of course), will not contain the detail specifics just yet, just the overall big Picture, and the Basic Outline and Format of the Manual and the Game. The main details of the Game will be released in the next, and basically Play and "Event Ready" version of the Manual. With the Goal of premiering at the "Captain's Summit" in the Fall (fingers crossed), I have a scant 9 months to get the Entire game, finished and all of it's parts finalized. And that, is a very tall order, if you consider the entire physical site also has to be built and ready.... Worse case, the Missions will be Premired one at a Time rather than all at once. I had originally thought I could just pick up a standard LARP Manual, do some minor alterations and be done with that part. Yeah, it was a nice thought. Even though I liked the cadence of many of their versions of gameplay, most was based around Dice or Cards, with GM playing alongside with you. Which right away I didn't need because the physical GM could be with the APP. The App can literally walk you through the entire mission using pre-arranged Video and Message Alert's as well as the Mission Outline and Available Options and Standing Orders for the Player. (for instances, when the NPC Klingon walks up, the Captain of the Team has a List of Options in his Version of the App, where he has a list of Commands and Optons available to choose from, in this case, he would Pull up his Command Status page, and among the among the list will Be "Encounter" then a list will come up that includes "Alien Lifeform" and it will walk you through the Mission thusly. As you get better at the Game you will only have to occasionally "consult" your Mission's Commands and Status Page (each Command Page will be relevant to the Department you are assigned to) And yes before you ask, I will be releasing the Demo version of the App soon. I'm trying to update as much as possible before it is released. The App pretty laid out the terms of the Gameplay and the styles for the Missions, which lead to outlining the Missions, and their Levels. Once those were Defined I could go on to Design the Threats and Obstacles, to be encountered during the Mission... I went with Levels to Missions because the Learning Curve to a really good Game is steep, especially if you want it to have real depth, challenges and rewards. The Levels allow the Player to advance while still learning the Game. I'm trying to input sophistication into each Level so that no matter how many times you have Played it, it will provide a different, richer deeper, funner experience, every time. The "Realtime Combat" aspect of a LARP had to be addressed. I mean, if a NPC Klingon shows up and says, "you're on my Planet", are you allowed to sock him in his jaw, and Rob him ala Captain Kirk? can you even touch the NPC? Is Gameplay by Dice, Cards or Vocal Incantations, Phys-Rep throw Bags etc? is there any touching, wrestling, melee weapons, or fighting at all? How does the Point System work? What are the Uniforms and Ranks and Advancement happen? These are the questions the Manual will answer, and more... Like I said I want even the first rough Draft to outline all these aspects. Even though a large portion of my day is working on the Rulebook, which usually starts at around 6:30 am, after morning Meditation. I spend maybe 6 hours, mixing other Work, as necessary. Today I am prepping the Pre-fab Door unit, getting it cleaned up and ready to install. The Entrances will be the first parts of the Village walls to be installed. Started making a little headway today on getting the housing for the Anti-Graviton Containment Device (ACD) going. Using a gutted Black and Decker Battery Charger, and will hook the Buttons directly to the Arduino, and use the LCD Panel it comes with as the Monitor... bada bing bada boom... The Charger runs about $60 at Walmart, probably even cheaper else where online, once the Prototype is made and finalized, and ready to duplicate. It does look like I may need to fabricate a new bezel though.. The Graviton Containment Device (ACD) is particularly useful on Mission where strange Alien Lifeform Containment needs to be used, with hands free access. Every Away Team will carry one of these, in a safe and secure carrying case, usually manned by someone in Engineering, or Tactical. You capture dangerous Lifeforms in a temporary Stasis Field, then safely transport it back to HQ, to be transferred to a more secure Storage Unit.

I am just now waking up from that covid-slumber, and trying to figure out how to get this juggernaut back up on Track and running. Good News though, I think I have a pretty good understanding of Game Mechanics for the Combat Section laid out. The issue always comes when you try to write Rules for Phaser Type Weapons in the same Game that has a Batleth.. Got the Character Creation Section mapped out (kinda), and about to drop another 40 pages of General Game Mechanics into that Section as well. Now hoping to pick up a PC Laptop with Windows 10 to start building the APP, and to Run the Starship Bridge Software. We have begun updating the new Event Timelines, putting in the new Event Dates. Those that have been upgraded include, the Captain's Summit, will be held starting April 5th-9th 2024 (yup, 5 Days), the Away Mission:001 will now be held on April 5th-9th (also 5 days). The 5 Days takes into account of the Active LARP Simulation. The first few days will be people Training in their Postions, etc. Lt will also be "Free Time" with no Duty Shift, till the actual start of the Game Thursday... Got sidetracked in the enormity of the under taken.. the Research and Testing is draining. I still have to chose which Bridge Simulation Software to go with (there are several choices now). I want one that can double as an Outpost Command Center Software as well.. trying to get as much nailed down and defined as possible. It is just so stupid to bring people on when you sdont have a clearly defined Role for them, because the just of the Project hasn't been defined yet.. which was one of the main reasons behind rebranding the entire LARP from Starfleet, to Starbase 1.. I don't want to cross paths with their Star Trek IP Attorneys... LoL The Ranch Site now needs a complete overhaul, after sitting unsed and basically unfinished, in building limbo) it did not take well to not being used for going on what... 2 years almost.... yikes Sad news, the new PC Laptop (i had just upgraded to Windows 11, too, merde) succumbed to its injuries, in its encounter with the Flyswatter.. it runs if hooked up to a monitor through HDMI (Great for the Bridge Sim Software, that needs a dedicated Server), my Android Pad won't Boot up, so can't check out the Game Software.. But, I'm in good Health, and fast access, o all in all I'm good.. Would like to have the Game Maunuel ready, and the New Players Guide to be updated, before anything goes Live.. Still up in the air on Weapons.. Airport, or Lasertag... Live Long, and Prosper... in service, Smitty ============ END TEXT MESSAGE ============= Commander R. A. E. Smythe III Esq.
